AMANDA HOWARD

Rahma el-Dennaoui

As the mother of a toddler, one of my greatest fears would be losing my little girl. I could not imagine my life without her. Yet, as the entire world searches for English toddler Madeleine McCann, another family in Sydney are searching for their own baby.

The little girl with the big brown eyes

Nineteen-month-old Rahma el-Dennaoui disappeared during the night of November 10, 2005. The little girl, was asleep when her father Hosayn put to bed that evening in their little house in Lurnea.  He had kissed his three girls good night before returning to the family room for some quiet time with his wife, Alyaa.

The baby girl shared a bed with her two sisters, in a room with two other siblings in the cramped house. In total the el-Dennaoui family were blessed with eight children. The three youngest girls were very close and wouldn’t have been able to sleep any other way.

The following morning, Rahma’s parents crept into the girls’ room to check on them. To their shock they found their baby girl missing. The window was also open, and the flyscreen sliced open.

The police were quickly called, and most people suspected that perhaps the toddler had wandered off during the night.  The local area was canvassed, drains searched and every house in the neighbourhood checked, in case someone had found the little girl with the big brown eyes.

As hours turned into days, people turned their attentions back to the flyscreen and window. It was now suspected that someone had climbed through the street-facing window and stolen the baby.

The screen and window were dusted, as police searched for fingerprints and fibres that may have pointed to a suspect, without success.

Days turned into weeks and now the case has entered years without any breakthrough. The police have offered a reward for any information regarding the baby, without success.
