PANIC                                                                               Amanda Howard

Panic spread throughout my body as I fought against my binds! I could feel the sweat dripping down my face as I leaned my one free arm closer to the button. I did not know what would happen if I pressed it. If it would it be the end or perhaps only the beginning of my nightmare. I reached out, inching closer. My shoulder felt as if it was going to rip  out of its socket as the ropes held me tight against the pole.

I closed my eyes as if that would make me grow another inch. Somehow it worked. The pad of my fingertip scraped against the button. I opened my eyes and let out a tiny laugh of satisfaction. I could do this. I was going to be free.

I leaned closer, willing myself to reach it just one more time. I felt the button give way under my touch. I gave a barbaric yell of achievement. I had done it.

Somewhere in the darkened room a piece of machinery started to hum as my sense of achievement turned to dread. I moved my head the inch that the binds gave me. I could not see anything in the darkness. The sounds were terrifying.

“Is anybody there? Help me, please. Can you hear me?” I wondered why I was being so polite when my life may be slipping from my very own grasp.

“Help.” The mechanical noise grew louder and louder, drowning out my desperate pleas for help. I blinked, trying to look beyond the shadows that surrounded me. Something was there, I could feel it. My other senses were heightened by my loss of visual stimuli.

I tried to scream over the noise of the machinery.

“I know you’re there. Help me. Get me out of this place.” I begged with the entity I could not see. My body was strapped hard against the concrete pole. Only one hand was free. My body ached as I tried to work out how long I had been here. It seemed like days.
